On January 17, 2023, Exodus Transitional Community joined the Clean Slate Campaign for a lobbying day in Albany. In New York State, 2.3 Million New Yorkers have a criminal conviction. The collateral consequences of convictions are far-reaching. Even after release from jail/prison, people face employment, housing, education discrimination, and significant societal stigma. Our Black and Latinx communities are negatively impacted the most. Passing the Clean Slate Act would help to rectify this. Clean Slate would automatically seal convictions after a designated period (3 years for misdemeanor convictions and seven years for felony convictions). Let’s give New Yorkers a real second chance – one where collateral consequences of convictions don’t exist.
